For co-founder Trang Warden, Zen Day Spa isn’t just about giving the best hand treatments or the best facials; the business of beauty has been a family affair for over 15 years. Trang’s father gave the family an entrepreneurial spirit from the beginning; Trang’s mother owned a San Francisco salon, and Trang herself got into the business as a part-time manicurist at age 17. She continued through college, working on her Business degree while gaining valuable hands-on experience in customer service, management, and different beauty techniques.
Even after Trang graduated and took a job for a Fortune 500 company, she still performed beauty treatments on the weekend with her sister, Tracy Nguyen, at West Portal’s Zen Beauty Spa. It meant seven-day work weeks, but it fulfilled both of her passions, finance and the art of beauty. Trang took it one step further by partnering with good friend Sandy Ma to launch Dolci Beauty Lounge in summer 2004. Located in the Lower Haight, Dolci grew into a successful business, and two years later, Trang and her husband Chris assumed full ownership.
Another family venture started in 2005 when the youngest sister, Linda Nguyen, created Glow Hand and Foot Spa. It was yet another stepping stone towards the creation of Zen Day Spa. The idea of Zen Day Spa was for the family to take all of the expertise from the previous ventures and fuse it into a single full-service day spa. The name Zen was taken from Tracy’s establishment in honor of her inspiration. Today, Zen Day Spa stands as both a driving factor and a testament to the family legacy of beauty and business.
